Social Change Day is a special event celebrated annually at TMA.  The event involves all aspects of TMA curricula and studies and involves, teachers, students and community organizations in discussions, demonstrations and exchange of ideas.  Students arranged in groups across the spectrum and guided by a teacher are given tours of exhibits, invited to discussions or exposed to various themes on Social Change in American society.

This year's universal themes included:

Reflective Assignments

The activities of the day begin at 8:45 AM in a school-wide Town Meeting which resulted in group assignments and distribution of information packets.  At 9:20 AM, students listened to an opening address with several guest speakers including the New York City Schools Chancellor.  Shortly afterward, groups begin circulating to workshops and presentations.  

At the end of the presentations, students were scheduled a period of reflection and guided discussion feedback. Each student was required to write 1-2 paragraphs about Social Change Day.

  1. Discuss what you can do to further the social change efforts of an organization represented today
  2. Which workshop/s did you enjoy the most? Why?
  3. Which workshop/s did you enjoy the least? Why?
  4. Which organization/s would you like to learn more about?, what?, why?
  5. Select an organization or topic represented today and suggest logical “next steps” it should take
  6. Select an organization or topic represented today and discuss the impact or relevancy of its operation in relation to Social Change 
  7. Select and organization or topic represented today and write a reaction. Include your thoughts and feelings, its effect on you, what you learned, etc.
  8. The folder contains descriptors of Social Change, what would you add/delete? Why? Or select one of the descriptors and explain how it relates to Social Change
  9. Any other topic of your choice
